Worms Don’t Get Muddy

Function

Even when they are in the ground, worms do not get muddy. This is because a negative charge is naturally created in their epidermis when earthworms move through the earth. Because the small water particles in the soil carry a positive charge, is attracted to the worm’s epidermis. The collected water covers the worm’s epidermis like a thin membrane, acting as a barrier preventing the soil does from adhering to the worm’s skin. At the same time, the water acts as a lubricant, allowing earthworms to move smoothly through the soil.

Proposals of Applied Technology

Technology replicating worms’ ability to stay mud-free can be used to develop vehicles that do not require cleaning, such as agricultural tractors, bulldozers and trucks at construction sites, or vehicles used for mine drilling. It can also be used to develop water collection from the soil for plant growing, or to restore dry, hard, compressed soil by passing water through it.
