When looking for food, one type of slime mold transforms its shape to create the shortest possible distances between iself and its sources of food.

Autonomous robots have been developed that mimick the movements of the slime mold.

Slime mold can be used to develop a model for how to logically construct intercity networks, including the infrastructure necessary for water, electricity, aqueducts, and cellphone networks. Advancements include the development of systems that can reconstruct themselves into an efficient network when one part is lost on account of natural disasters or accidents. Slime mold can also explain the mechanisms through which tumors construct networks of vessels.
