Refined Glass Fibers Compose the Venus' Flower Basket

The Venus' Flower Basket, or Euplectella aspergillum, forms a cylindrical basket of needle-thin glass fibers by converting silicic acid from seawater into silica. The Venus’ Flower Basket completes this process in moderate (low) temperatures.

We are working to isolate Venus’ Flower Basket’s fiber creation mechanism so that it can be applied to the development of low-cost, high quality glass fibers using a low-temperature process. The Venus’ Flower Basket itself can also be used to create optical fibers by cultivating them in large tanks for production, advancing the field of manufacturing technology with low environmental impact.
