Penguin Has All-Seeing Eyes

Function

The King penguin lives on islands mainly found in the extremely cold climate of the South Pole. The structure of the penguin’s eyes has adapted to help the penguin live on top of the ice. The penguin goes back and forth between two different worlds, dealing with both the glittering brilliance of the ice and the darkness of the ocean where it dives to find food. Accordingly, the penguin’s eyes are different from those of other birds. During the day, the King penguin’s pupils narrow into the shape of small, rectangular slits. However, when penguins swim in the dark ocean to find food, their pupils widen and become round. The change in the size and shape of its pupils means that the penguin is not sensitive to bright light, even without sunglasses. Conversely, the penguin does not need any extra light to find food, even in the dark ocean.

Proposals of Applied Technology

We could use the properties of the King penguin’s eyes to develop contact lenses for people with various types of visual impairments. For example, such contact lenses might help with night blindness, a condition in which people have trouble seeing in dark places. They could also help with the condition of hemeralopia, the inability to see well in bright light. The eye structure of penguins may be useful in developing new equipment for eye examinations, such as testing equipment that assesses the person’s ability to sense degrees of light and dark. This type of new equipment would also be useful for more advanced eye examinations, such as exams to detect cataracts (a type of vision impairment) at an early stage, or determine how a patient’s sight has changed after surgery.
